 Jargon for the 21st Century

 

 

 

Ethernet- a type of network technology for local area networks; coaxial cable carries radio frequency signals between computers at a rate of 10 megabits per second

 

Hard Drive- computer hardware that holds and spins a magnetic or optical disk and reads and writes information on it.

 

Hyperlink- a link from a hypertext file to another location or file; typically activated by clicking on a highlighted word or icon at a particular location on the screen

 

Memory- a unit of a computer that preserves data for retrieval

 

Motherboard- The main board of a computer, usually containing the circuitry for the central processing unit, keyboard, and monitor and often having slots for accepting additional circuitry

 

Network- a system of computers interconnected by telephone wires or other means in order to share information

 

Operating System- The software that allows software users to run applications with the hardware of a specific system.  Microsoft, Windows, or Apple computer's OS are examples of operating systems.

 

PowerPoint- presentation software that allows you to create slides, handouts, notes, and outlines

 

Processor- the part of a computer (a microprocessor chip) that does most of the data processing; "the CPU and

the memory form the central part of the computer to which the peripherals are attached."

 

Webpage- a document on the world wide web, consisting of an HTML file and any related files for scripts and graphics, and often hyperlinked to other documents on the web.
